Setting Up a Study Space

Sunday March 5, 2006

One of my good friends is a radio personality and writer. When she writes her scripts she goes to the special place she has set aside where she can be all alone in her thoughts. Her space is a rickety shed in her backyard with no electricity and a wood burning stove for heat. She writes her material by hand, all alone in her special place, as if she’s performing a ceremony. You don’t have to go to this extreme of course. But it’s often helpful for students to set up a private space for study, a place all their own, that suits their individual personalities. And it doesn’t help to treat your study time like a nightly ceremony.
