Understanding Learning Styles

Thursday May 25, 2006
Scientists have long recognized that students learn in different ways. Sometimes, the best way to improve your school performance is to identify and use your best learning styles. There are a few types of learning styles.

This learning style quiz will help you determine if you learn best by seeing, hearing, or acting out information from your course work.

Some psychologists say that people also view reading passages or problems in one of two ways: they either see a big picture or they see a group of little parts.

For instance, if you are a holistic or “big picture” learner, you are more concerned about understanding the entire chapter when reading a book than one paragraph. On the other hand, an analytic or “little parts” person may be more likely to get hung up on a tough concept or paragraph, and this makes it more difficult for them to lumber through a chapter. It is essential for this kind of learner to understand each part, in order to understand the whole.
