Planning Ahead for Prom

Wednesday September 20, 2006
I know, I know, prom is a long way off. That's exactly why I recommend you start planning for it now. Many students are enjoying Homecoming dances right now, so they know how the many related expenses can pile up. You may also know that you're going to want a whole new outfit and many accessories for prom at the end of the year.

If negotiating for Homecoming was tough and you're concerned about how your parents will react to your requests for prom, you can head off potential fights and problems by writing up a contract.

A homework contract is an agreement that you and your parents build together. Now is a great time to think ahead, make a list of future needs (like a limo), and set up a fair plan for meeting your wants and needs by the end of the year. Simply set goals and assign rewards for meeting each goal.

For instance, a good grade in math can be "cashed in" for a prom dress. A semester of perfect attendance can earn you a limo. Get it? This is a great way to secure the things you need and make your parents happy at the same time.
