Learning to Type the Right Way

Monday September 25, 2006
The further you advance in your education, the more important it will be to type in the right way. Speed and accuracy will become increasingly important as you advance through high school, college, and then to a career. Poor typing skills will slow you down and hold you back!

The good news is that learning to type can be fun. There are lots of programs and tutorials available, and many of them are available for free, on the internet.

It is very important that you start out by learning and practicing the correct placement and use of fingers on the keys. Don't get too attached to bad habits! Start out using the right fingers to avoid problems.

Once you conquer the first step, move on to slow and methodical practice of all the keys. Next, find a site that makes learning fun, like this site which has a little pop-up game that drops letters from the sky. It's a little primitive, but at least it provides an entertaining way to practice.

The next step is to find a program to test you on your typing scores. You just type a passage as quickly and accurately as you can, and then receive a score. This type of program will help you build speed and accuracy in a fun way.
