Speech Recognition on Your Computer

Saturday January 20, 2007

If your computer came equipped with Office XP, you can train it to type what you say and read back what you’ve typed! These are great features for auditory learners.

The speech tools, called voice recognition and text-to-speech, are built into many modern computers. These tools can be useful for many homework tasks, but they can also be fun to play with!

With speech recognition, you can read your notes into a microphone while your computer types. By going through the process of reading and listening, you may increase your ability to remember and recall information. There are a few steps you’ll need to learn to set up your speech tools, but even the steps are fun. You’ll train your computer to recognize your own unique speech patterns and then choose a voice for your computer to use.

You can determine if your computer is equipped with speech tools by going to the Control Center (from the Start menu). If you find a Speech icon, your computer should be equipped.
