Evan O'Dorney Wins Spelling Bee
This week, 139 boys and 147 girls gathered together in Washington D.C. to participate in the 80th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. After conquering words like myrmecologist, Egyptiac, and geostationary, fifteen finalists gathered Thursday night for the final rounds.
It was a remarkable battle, but the last young man standing finally prevailed by spelling the word "serrefine." The winner was eighth-grader Evan O'Dorney, of Walnut Creek, CA.
Congratulations, Evan! There were tense moments and comical moments during the final rounds Thursday. One highlight occurred when Joseph Henares of New Haven heard the definition to his word "punaise," which was a type of bedbug. "OK, I like bedbug better," Henares responded.
