Valedictorians a Thing of the Past?

Wednesday July 4, 2007

If you've been dreaming all your life about becoming your high school valedictorian, you may need to rethink your ambitions. Many schools are doing away with the traditional honor.

This long-held tradition has fallen victim to the atmosphere of fierce competition among college hopefuls, according to a report from USA Today. Some parents and students have gone to extreme measures to win the top honor--to the point that many high schools have given up.

More and more high schools have begun to award designated honors with diplomas similar to those that colleges award. Now, many high school students may receive similar honors because the awards are based on each student's grade point average. These awards include cum laude and summa cum laude designations.

What do you think? How does your high school award special honors?
