The Best School Supply

Tuesday August 7, 2007

If I had to choose a single object for students to use as a study aid, it would be the sticky-note flag, like the ones you’ll find at 3M - Post-it.

These little paper banners are invaluable when it comes to getting organized, whether you’re putting together a big research project or you’re simply reading a book.

How can you put the sticky note to work for you?

  • Mark your calendar. Set up a large wall calendar in your bedroom or another high-traffic area. Each time you have a large project due, place a sticky flag on the appropriate date. You’ll be reminded of your project each time you walk by.
  • Flag your book. Every time you read a book, place a sticky flag on any pages of note. If it’s a work of literature you should mark any terms that reflect an important theme. If it’s a textbook or a research article, mark any phrases or facts you intend to use in a report.
  • Mark your class notes. Your teacher will bring up many important facts or themes during class lectures. Keep your sticky flags with you as you take class notes and mark anything that stands out.
  • Set up reminder flags. Whenever you need to remember to take a certain object or assignment to school, place a sticky flag on the door knob or the cereal box the night before. This can be a lifesaver!

As you can see, there are countless uses for these simple paper flags. If you can think of more uses, please feel free to share them!
