Underline or Quotation Marks?

Wednesday September 26, 2007

Just when you think you've memorized the rules for punctuating titles, you read a passage on the Internet that refers to a book title in "quotation marks." What's that about? Your teacher and the Homework Guide both tell you to underline a book title! Who's right?

There is a good explanation for the difference between punctuation styles on your homework and in the writing you see in newspapers and on the Internet. Most high school students learn to write essays and research papers according to the MLA style of writing. Newspaper writers and many people who write on the Internet are trained journalists, and journalists adhere to the rules of AP style of writing. It's that simple, but it still confuses many professional people.
