Hearing Loss and Homework

Friday September 28, 2007

There’s a serious learning problem spreading through the teen population, and it poses a big threat to your academic career. Studies show that teens are showing the same symptoms of hearing loss that have traditionally been recognized in aging adults. Recent government studies have shown that an alarming number of young Americans--an estimated 5.2 million--show some degree of hearing loss.

The cause? You guessed it: cool things like cell phones and earbuds as well as loud concerts.

In 2001 the New York Times reported a great increase in hearing problems among teens. Since then, teens have increased their use of ear-blasting gadgets.

Hearing loss can have an enormous effect on your ability to perform well in school, especially if you don't know you have a problem.

On a personal note: Yesterday I helped a young man with a research problem. He called my line and I answered as I always do-- with "This is Grace." We talked for several minutes, and before he hung up he said "Thank you Mrs. Green."

If you think that loud music isn't affecting your hearing and your grades, you may want to think again. Just to be on the safe side, turn it down a notch!
