Afraid to Ask?
Nobody wants to be laughed at or ridiculed. Very often, when we don’t understand something in class or when we’re totally lost, we don’t want to raise our hands because we think we’re the only ones feeling totally clueless.
But that’s rarely the case. If you’re lost or confused, chances are most of the class is feeling the very same way. There are a few ways to avoid embarrassment during those clueless moments. For instance:
- If you missed something the teacher said, you could say: “Can you repeat that last part? I couldn’t write fast enough to get it down.”
- If you want to make light of your confusion say: “Am I the only one who’s feeling lost?”
- If your teacher is explaining a process or concept that you don’t understand, ask “Where can I read more about this?” The teacher will point out sources that might make it more clear.
Still not satisfied? Perhaps you don’t ask questions because your teacher makes you uncomfortable for asking. It happens!
If you’re in a situation like this, it’s true that it might be better to wait to ask your questions at a later time or to wait and ask somebody else. Just keep taking notes, jot down your questions in the margins, and ask later.
