Considering Advanced Placement

Wednesday June 18, 2008

Before you start this school year, you may want to consider signing up for one or more Advanced Placement courses. Advanced Placement (or AP) actually refers to a program offered by The College Board. In fact, the term AP can refer to the courses you take in high school or it can refer to the actual tests you take.

Students normally take AP courses in grades 10-12 and then sign up to take AP tests at the end of the senior year. On each test, the student may receive a score that ranges from 1 to 5.

If you are interested in signing up for AP courses, have a chat with your guidance counselor to make sure they’ll fit into your diploma program.

Just wanted to say that I taught Advanced Placement Calculus for several years and can highly recommend the AP program. It’s not for everyone, but for those serious students who need more challenging work than what the standard curriculum offers it is an excellent option.
