Time Management for Night Owls

Friday October 17, 2008

Are you a night person? Some people, especially many teens, tend to feel most productive and mentally alert late at night. That poses a bit of a problem for students who have to be up and alive at six or seven in the morning.

I know it’s a struggle for you in the mornings if you’re a night owl. But to be successful and to reach your goals and dreams, you simply must find a way to manage your time in the mornings. You can’t afford to be late every morning or to forget an important item occasionally because you’re dashing out the door in a frantic state.

The one task that is probably most time consuming is hair maintenance. One obvious move is to take a shower at night and then do a quick refresher in the morning. If you let your hair dry overnight and just do the rest in the morning you can cut fifteen minutes from your routine.

You know I love the homework timer, because the little tick-tock sound keeps your mind on your work and gives you a strong sense of time passing. It helps you get things done in a timely manner. If you must shower in the morning—or if tend to lose track of time brushing your teeth—try using a timer in the mornings when you’re in the bathroom. It cuts down on the time you spend staring into the mirror wondering why the lights are so bright.

Pack things the night before. Put all of your assignments in your backpack and make sure you have pencils, pens, and perhaps a breakfast bar.

Limit yourself when it comes to hitting the snooze button. Then stick to your own rules! Twice is plenty. Three times is a splurge.

If you are a night owl and you’ve found other ways to manage time in the morning, please share!
