How to Follow Instructions

Monday November 3, 2008

Sure, you think it's simple to follow instructions. Just read and do. But is it really that simple?

There are certain words found in instructions, especially instructions that appear on tests, that can be misunderstood or misinterpreted by students. For example, do you know the difference between "explain" and "illustrate" when it comes to answering a question on a science test? What about "relate" and "review" on a literature exam?

I've provided a long list of instructional words that you may encounter on your next big test. Look over the words and become familiar with their very precise meanings. It can make a big difference when it comes to earning or losing valuable points!
