There are many smart people out there trying to figure out why some students stay in college and why some students drop out. Dropout is a huge problem, but it’s difficult to know why student enthusiasm and determination fizzle after the first year. Why do I bring up this depressing subject?

Because I want you to avoid it! You can avoid becoming a college dropout.

One fact that always emerges is that involvement is a huge reason for sticking it out. By participating in a club, sport, activity, organization, discussion group, or by working on campus, students get a feeling of belonging. This sense of belonging acts as an anchor; it keeps the student in place, surrounded by structure, and committed to successful degree completion.

In high school and in college, it’s important to find a happy zone of some kind, where you can mingle with people who share your interests or passions. You’ll be much more successful within this support structure.
