How Do You Know If a College Is Real or Fake?

I keep getting ads for fake colleges in my inbox, and it really irks me. I know students are getting the same ads, and I know lots of people are being scammed.

It seems like it should be simple to tell whether a college is real or fake. It seems like a black and white issue, but it's actually not. Some colleges are state-funded (like state universities) so they are safe. But some colleges are private--which means they are really run like businesses--so that's where a big gray area comes in. Like any business, a college business can be a good deal or a really bad deal.

To make matters worse, since online colleges are really private business, I could get into a legal tangle for telling you that a certain one is bad! That's why I've decided to leave it up to a public discussion. If you want to know if a college is real or rip-off, ask the forum! There are good researchers out there who can give you a really informed opinion.
