Just Now Applying to College?

There are many seniors out there who are just now applying to colleges for this fall. I know it sounds crazy to those who started planning and adhering to the college timeline at the beginning of the freshman year. In fact, many students will be fine applying now for classes that start in a few months. Small to medium colleges--both public and private--are accepting students right up to the latest possible moment.

There are a few things to consider if you are a late bloomer, though. Consider the following:

  • Your financial aid packet might not be ready in time for fall, even if you are. Make sure you visit fafsa.org and put the paperwork in as soon as possible.
  • If you're not accepted soon, you'll miss the orientation sessions that take place in the summer. Why is that bad? At orientation you can sign up for fall classes. If you have to wait until the last minute to sign up, the good classes will be filled and you'll end up with a whacky schedule.
  • The earlier you get signed up for classes, the earlier you can buy your books. College bookstores sell new books and used books, and the used books go first because they are much less expensive. If you can buy books early you can save hundreds of dollars!

I have nothing against late bloomers; I've worked in colleges long enough to know that some of the best and brightest students make late decisions. But I don't want you to pay a big price for it!
