To Add a Special Touch to Your Paper

You can often strengthen your writing project with carefully-chosen quotes. Spice up your paper with great words from a famous scientist, a great historian, or even a comedian. This list will get you started with resources for famous last words, words of wisdom, and other quotes from famous and not-so-famous people.

1. First Lines

This link leads to some of the most famous first lines of books. Example: "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen." George Orwell, 1984.

2. Proverbia

This site offers proverbs in addition to some quotes from literature and media. "A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man perfected without trials," Chinese Proverb.

3. ThinkExist

This site is another very extensive resource. It has a great search engine to help you find any sort of topic or information you need. They boast that they have over 300,000 quotes by 20,000 authors, so there is sure to be something to help you here! "There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it," Oscar Wilde.

4. Last Words

This is a site of famous last words, from the last words of criminals before execution to last words of celebrities and authors. There are even some famous suicide notes for some lighter reading. "I did not get my Spaghetti-O's, I got spaghetti. I want the press to know this."

5. Quotation Quiz

Here you'll find a site that quizzes you by giving you the line of a book. You have to guess what book it is. "'Christmas won't be Christmas without any presents,' grumbled Jo, lying on the rug." Recognize this one?

6. Quotes at About.com

You know this is good! This site has Bible quotes, wedding toasts, eulogy quotes, and tools to help you understand how to use quotations. This one features top ten lists for love quotes, quotations about quotations, Shakespeare Quotes—all worth taking a look at.

7. No Beliefs

This site has a more controversial theme. There are biblical and scientific quotes that challenge the normal way of thinking. "God is on our side, and Satan is on the side of the United States." -Saddam Hussein

9. Rock Wisdom

This is a collection of quotes pulled from song lyrics. They range from political to romantic and are taken from all genres of music.

10. Brainyquote

This is an extensive list of quotes with topics ranging from age, war, literature, environmentalists, and explorers, just to name a few.
