Branches of Government

Definition: The individual sections or divisions of the government that carry out specific roles. The U.S. government has branches that serve to provide checks and balances on the other branches. This system is designed to prevent any one division from having excessive control. The three branches of the United States government are legislative, executive, and judicial.

The judicial branch of the U.S. government refers to the Supreme Court.
