100 Transition Words

By

Once you have completed a first draft of your paper, your next step is to read over your work and observe how well your ideas and topics flow throughout your paper.

It is normal, after a first draft, for your paragraphs to be a little choppy and out of order. This might seem to be a big problem to tackle, but it is really easy to address.

First, be sure to work with a printed copy of your paper (instead of working on a computer screen). Next, read over your paragraphs and find topics that seem closely related. Number your paragraphs in an order that seems to be more logical, grouping similar topics together.

Now it's time to re-arrange your paragraphs, using your word processing program. Simply cut and paste your paragraphs in the numbered order. Read them again to see if the topics flow in a more logical pattern.

Once you are satisfied with the order or your paragraphs, you will need to rewrite some of the introductory sentences at the beginning and the transition statements at the end of every paragraph.

Transitions seem challenging at first, but they get easier once you consider the many possible methods for linking paragraphs together - even if they seem to be unrelated. For example, you can connect two seemingly unrelated paragraphs with "just as interesting" or "beyond this observation," and your transition will flow well.

If you have trouble thinking of a way to connect your paragraphs, consider a few of these 100 (plus) transition words as inspiration.
