Tech Prep Diploma Q&A

By Grace Fleming, About.com

Some students don't receive counseling before they enter high school. For this reason, it's possible for students to choose a high school diploma program that doesn't really fit them, and they do this without fully understanding the consequences.

A Tech Prep program is great for some students, but not for others. It is important for students and parents to understand the Tech Prep program.

What is a Tech Prep program?

Tech Prep programs provide high school students with a more vocation-oriented program of study. Students on a Tech Prep track begin the program during high school and complete 2 to 4 more years of training in a technical college.

What kinds of students choose to enroll in Tech Prep?

Some students want to find a job soon after they finish high school and others may struggle with advanced course work. Those students may find that vocational and technical prep programs are more appropriate for them.

Tech Prep helps students who enjoy hands-on careers. Tech Prep programs are designed to train students for work and to teach specific, job-relevant math and science skills.

How does Tech Prep work?

Students can prepare for technical college study while in high school. Tech Prep diploma students get credit for some technical college courses while still in high school so students don’t have to repeat courses.

How fast can I join the workforce?

Students who complete Tech Prep programs may be ready to enter the workplace and earn money in a particular field quicker than students who finish a university degree. Technical college programs can be completed in 2 to 4 years.

How do I apply for a technical college program?

If you enroll in a Tech Prep program you’ll probably find yourself in contact with technical college counselors who visit your school. Technical colleges often offer students more assistance in the college application process, due to smaller numbers of students who apply. This can mean a smoother transition between high school and college for many students.

What if I want to go to work right after high school?

Most studies show that graduating from high school is not sufficient preparation for entering the workplace in today’s technical society. Tech Prep can help students who want to go to work and earn good money soon after high school.

How does enrollment in Tech Prep hurt you?

If you want to attend a public college or university, you should not select a Tech Prep program. You will need to complete a College Prep program to get into a university.

Can I switch programs?

Tech Prep students usually cannot change their minds and switch to College Prep programs in high school without a lot of difficulty. It may be possible to change diploma tracks during the freshman year, but students will probably be locked into a Tech Prep track after the first year.

College Prep programs prepare students for college and university enrollment, so those courses are more academically challenging than those in Tech Prep.

Can I switch from a College Prep program to a Tech Prep program?

It’s a little easier to switch from College Prep to Tech Prep because some of the more rigorous courses in College Prep can substitute for Tech Prep courses (but not the other way around).

However, the answer will actually depend on your specific high school policy and your high school status. For instance, a senior would have a tough time switching and completing all the requirements.

What sorts of programs are offered in Tech Prep?

The people who plan Tech Prep programs usually work in consultation with local industries in a specific location to offer programs that are most relevant to the community.

Computer skills and clerical skills are common everywhere. Many public careers like cosmetology, practical nursing, dental assistance, emergency medical and fire science are also common.

Where can I find more technical college information?

Your guidance counselor can provide plenty of information about technical colleges. If you want to do your own research, you’ll find that it’s easy to find information about technical college programs with a simple Internet search. You can get started with the Technical Schools Guide.
