You may be wondering how to give yourself an edge and make yourself stand out when it comes to speaking with college representatives. One thing that always makes a lasting impression is the ability of some students to talk about a really interesting and unusual hobby or extracurricular activity. However, this can be especially challenging for students who don’t live close to a big urban area, where there's typically a greater variety of opportunities.
You don't have to be limited when it comes to developing a special skill or talent, but you might have to use your imagination a little. And you should get started right away! While it’s never too late to start a new activity for personal enrichment (and that is important), you should work on resume-enhancing activities all through your high school years.
This year you may want to consider becoming active in a club, sport or hobby that leaves a big impression with interviewers. Remember, they’ve talked to lots of students in their years. Need some ideas? You don’t have to live in the Big Apple for some of these:
- Writing music
- Writing a play
- Making household products at home
- Designing a car of the future
- Beekeeping
- Podcasting
- Photographing wildlife
- Clay animation
- Creating a comic book
The list goes on and on! Feel free to share your own interesting hobby.
