Hobbies and Extracurricular Activities

Friday July 25, 2008

You may be wondering how to give yourself an edge and make yourself stand out when it comes to speaking with college representatives. One thing that always makes a lasting impression is the ability of some students to talk about a really interesting and unusual hobby or extracurricular activity. However, this can be especially challenging for students who don’t live close to a big urban area, where there's typically a greater variety of opportunities.

You don't have to be limited when it comes to developing a special skill or talent, but you might have to use your imagination a little. And you should get started right away! While it’s never too late to start a new activity for personal enrichment (and that is important), you should work on resume-enhancing activities all through your high school years.

This year you may want to consider becoming active in a club, sport or hobby that leaves a big impression with interviewers. Remember, they’ve talked to lots of students in their years. Need some ideas? You don’t have to live in the Big Apple for some of these:

  • Writing music
  • Writing a play
  • Making household products at home
  • Designing a car of the future
  • Beekeeping
  • Podcasting
  • Photographing wildlife
  • Clay animation
  • Creating a comic book

The list goes on and on! Feel free to share your own interesting hobby.

20 Cures for a Restless Brain

Tuesday July 22, 2008

Are we there yet?

If you've heard yourself saying those words, you might be getting a little tired of the lazy days of summer. Don't get me wrong: I love summer as much as the next guy/girl, but I have lived through enough summers to know that active brains get restless after a month or so of downtime.

If you're starting to get a twitch but you're not quite restless enough to pull out the algebra workbook, you can consider one of these 20 things to do this summer. You'll find that some things can be fun, educational, and possibly profitable.
