Materials I Used

Cardboard box

Foam balls - $10

Jewlery wire -$3

Paint -$5

Spray paint -$2

Glitter -$1

Construction paper -$2

Construction Process

Our first step was to spray paint the cardboard box black and sprinkle the glitter inside while the paint was still wet. This gave the illusion of a starry universe. While we waited for the box to dry, we painted the foam balls to match the colors of the planets.

Once dry, we cut out Saturn's rings from construction paper and glued them around its center. We took the jewlery wire and cut it into lengths proportionate to the midddle of the box, then threaded the wire through the center of each palnet, curving the end into a hook to hold it in place. We poked two holes per planet in the top of the box, threading the wire up through one and back down the second. Finally, we twisted the end around the hanging line to hold the planets in place.

Lessons Learned

  • The black paint and white glitter ended up looking more green than white once combined. If I were to do it over again I would test the color combinations to get them closer to black and white.
