Where Did You Go?

Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, West Virginia

What Happened?

We went to the coal mine museum and park, which included lots of buildings like a church, houses, and a school plus the coal mine. Most of the buildings were built in the 1920s.

We were able to take a tour through the mine in a mining car. It's dark inside there, but we learned a lot about coal. It's cold in the coal mine all year long!

Lessons Learned

  • Coal companies built houses for the miners and families to rent.
  • They company also provided a store, church, and school.
  • There was also a company doctor who lived in the camp.
